SOCIETY OF FINANCIAL EXAMINERS
MARYLAND CHAPTER
About Us
The Maryland Chapter of the Society of Financial Examiners (SOFE-MD) is the local extension of its nationally-oriented parent and was created under its bylaws. As such, SOFE-MD promotes the objectives of its national parent to its members and interested parties by providing them with career development and educational opportunities. The Chapter’s primary vehicle for promoting the education of its members and interested parties is its annual Career Development Seminar (CDS) held in the early fall. Beginning with the attendance of only Maryland insurance regulators, SOFE-MD’s CDS has grown significantly over its more than ten-year history, and now includes over 150 participants representing regulators from several mid-Atlantic states, contractor firms, external accountant/auditor firms, external legal counsel, and industry executives. Speakers at the CDS discuss current topics relevant to the insurance industry and the financial regulation of insurers. Speakers at past events have included the Insurance Commissioners of several regional jurisdictions, NAIC executives and staff, other nationally-prominent regulators, and industry executives. While most sessions are designed to appeal to a broad audience, there are also breakout sessions aimed specifically at insurance examiners and financial analysts. SOFE-MD also seeks to provide its membership with additional educational opportunities whenever possible.

The Society of Financial Examiners is a professional society for examiners of insurance companies, banks, savings and loans, and credit unions. We have a membership of over 1,600 representing 50 states, the
The Society was established in 1973 to establish a strict code of professional standards for members engaged in the examination of financial institutions, to promote uniform ethical standards that will engender employer and public confidence to the degree that those interested can identify professionally qualified practitioners, and to promote and enforce minimum requirements of conduct, training, and expertise for members engaged in financial examination.
